Princess of Mars

These are the sketches and final comp for my Master Class painting. I'm still working on it and I hope to have it along with another painting done by the end of July. I'll have sketches, ideas, studies, and other smaller things to post throughout the month as I'll be planning a lot of my summer art while I paint. Without further ado, here are the finished drawings of John Carter, Dejah Thoris, the Great White Ape, and a little bonus picture.

  1. Julian, I'm loving the quality of your sketches here. Wonderful. Such strength in your lines. Have you finished your painting yet? I have hardly had a chance.
I always enjoy your photo references, especially when you do the posing. I like the many arms.

Jeff Hein is a tough teacher. I think it's easy to get spoiled by our teachers at IMC. They are so positive. Jeff doesn't let anything slide and rarely hands out compliments. He also wants you to figure out your own solutions, which is a good thing. He makes you work for it though. He certainly backs up many of Greg M.'s philosophies concerning talent vs. determination and work ethic. At 32, I can't get over the progress he has made in 10 years. His high school portfolio was nothing special. No secrets, I guess, Julian. Hard work and miles of canvas.
